Summary
The following tasks detail how to best unblock
a blocked toilet:
1 Using a plunger
2 Using a drain auger
3 Unblocking the waste system
Tools
Plunger, gloves
Materials
Drain auger
Step 1 - Using a plunger
If the water level in the pan of the toilet is
higher than normal or it temporarily fills and
then drains away slowly, there may well be a
blockage in the outlet of the pan or in the drain
system itself. First try and clear the blockage
using a plunger with a long handle. You need to
pump the plunger sharply at the bottom of the outlet.
Step 2 - Using a drain auger
If after repeated attempts the plunger does not
work, it is worth trying to work the blockage free
using a flexible drain auger. If this is not
available, a piece of curtain wire may suffice.
Step 3 - Unblocking the waste system
If neither of the previous methods works, the
blockage could be in the underground drain or
in the soil stack itself. Other waste outlets
may also be emptying slowly. It may be possible
to get at the soil stack through its rodding eye.
For both jobs you will need professional drain
rods and be able to endure dirty working conditions.
You should take precautions that you do not
contaminate yourself with the waste.
